I painted three portraits of writers for an exhibition at the Green Theater. In each, I tried to find a visual metaphor to talk about their work.
Isaak Babel wrote stories, so there is an adventure comic on the vest, and the glasses look like a broken wheel. As Wikipedia says, “Someone will see a wheelbarrow from Konarmia in it, someone will hear the knock of wheels on the cobblestone bridge vehicle of the Mendel Creek and Sons factory, for some it will be a history wheel, which at that cruel time was grinding the fate of people".
Aleksandr Green dreamed of a career as a sailor and wrote to all the famous "Scarlet Sails".
Konstantin Paustovsky wrote about nature, so the eyes from the bushes.
I made this portrait for another SHO ZA SKETCH project, which was dedicated to the Sixtiers. Leonid Plyushch - Ukrainian mathematician, publicist, literary critic, human rights activist, dissident. In 1973-1976 he was in the institutions of Soviet punitive psychiatry.
A group exhibition of portraits of writers who were associated with Odessa was held in the summer of 2020.
